Sophie Joanne van Bentum, born in the Netherlands in 1984, left a 12-year career as creative director in the fashion industry to establish her namesake brand in January 2021. Following law studies at university, the designer set forth on a pursuit of a more creative path with art studies and an internship in Paris before moving back to her native Amsterdam.
Coincidentally, both of Sophie’s grandmothers lived in India at one time and Sophie later traveled to the country twice a year during her fashion career. It is there that she discovered the ancient art of stone carving and her true calling, to use her creative skillset and imagination to create fine jewelry. Her first collection was made in close partnership with magnificent artists from India. Sophie’s appreciation for their craft combined with her unique vision led to a loving collaboration.
The contemporary traits of Sophie Joanne designs derive directly from the designer’s admiration of the modern arts. Her designs are immediately recognizable by their sculptural aesthetics, feminine energy, and often inflated forms.
